SEO Terms and Definitions

Keyword – a targeted word that will be used on web searches to find your website.

Keyword Phrase – a targeted group of words that will be used on web searches to find your website.

SEO – acronym for Search Engine Optimization which means to prepare your website for a particular group of keywords or keyword phrases to be found on internet search engines.

Pay-Per-Click – a targeted advertising program used by search engines to allow placement on the engines in return for payment on every click through they send you.

White Hat Optimization – the practice of using ethical standards to perform search engine optimization on a website.

Black Hat Optimization – the practice of using unethical techniques to perform search engine optimization on a website.

Spamming – the practice of hiding keywords on your website in order to produce better rankings on search engines.

PageRank – is a score given by Google to each website on the internet. The score ranges from 0 to 10 with 10 being the highest and best. The score is based upon an unknown algorithm that scores the quantity and quality of incoming links for a website.

Natural Results – refers to the results of an internet search on a search engine that are not paid for. They are the results found within the index of the search engine.

Paid Results – refers to the results of an internet search on a search engine that are paid for. They are usually identified as paid ads.

Keyword Density – is the percentage of times that a keyword appears on a web page as compared to the total amount of text on the page.

Web Standards Design – is web design based upon the web standards established by the W3C (w3.org). The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential.

Meta Tags – web coding on a web page that identifies properties of the page. It is unseen to a web page visitor unless they view the page source code.

Keyword Meta Tag – web coding on a web page that identifies the keywords of the page. It is unseen to a web page visitor unless they view the page source code.

Description Meta Tag – web coding on a web page that identifies a brief description of the page. It is unseen to a web page visitor unless they view the page source code.

Title Tag – web coding on a web page that identifies the title of the page. It is seen at the top of the browser window and in the bookmarking of the page.

Quality Links – are links from other websites to your site that help increase your Pagerank score. Attributes that effect the quality are relevancy to your site’s content, Pagerank score from the linking site, number of links on that linking page as well as other factors.
